Front Brings Relief, Water Resources Agency: Hsinchu Night Water Pressure Reduction Shortened by 2 Hours

Taiwan's Water Resources Agency announced a two-hour reduction in night-time water pressure cuts in Hsinchu due to recent rainfall, while continuing water conservation efforts across the island. Recent fronts brought significant water to central and northern reservoirs, but the agency warns of continued drought risks and urges public cooperation.

Currently, Taichung's water status light is 'water reminder' green, and Hsinchu's is 'pressure reduction water supply' yellow. Water status lights are divided into 4 colors based on the intensity of water-saving measures: green for water reminder; yellow for pressure reduction water supply; orange for reduced water supply; and red for zoned or fixed-point water supply.

The Water Resources Agency stated in a press release that before this rainfall, through cross-departmental cooperation on water conservation and various dispatch measures, a foundation for stable water conditions had been laid. Hsinchu, in response to the yellow water status, had maximized cross-regional dispatch from Taoyuan and Miaoli, and promoted pressure reduction water supply, industrial self-conservation, and government departments reducing non-essential water use. The Ministry of Agriculture also promoted systematic water conservation in the Touqian River basin agricultural system.

In Taichung, water is conserved through self-conservation by science parks and industrial parks, rotational irrigation by agricultural departments, strengthened irrigation management, and other methods. Anti-drought wells have also been activated to supplement water sources, saving reservoir outflow.

According to the Water Resources Agency, the front during the Qingming holiday brought significant benefits to reservoirs in central and northern Taiwan. Rainfall in the reservoir areas of Hsinchu's Baoshan and Baoshan Second, Miaoli's Yongheshan, and Taichung's Liyutan reached over 300 millimeters. After full efforts to divert and store water, this wave of rainfall is estimated to contribute about 190 million tons of water to reservoirs across Taiwan.

The Water Resources Agency pointed out that the current water storage rates of major reservoirs across Taiwan range from 20% to 90%. Among them, Shimen, Baoshan Baoshan Second, Liyutan, and Yongheshan reservoirs continue to see rising storage rates, with Mingde Reservoir nearing 90%. Considering the slight relief in Hsinchu's water situation, the night-time water pressure reduction measures for tap water have been adjusted and shortened. The period has been reduced from the original 10 PM to 5 AM the next day to 11 PM to 4 AM the next day, a reduction of 2 hours.

The Water Resources Agency emphasized that Taiwan has entered the late stage of the dry season. Although there has been spring rain, the subsequent plum rain season still presents variables. To continue to stabilize water supply across Taiwan, various drought prevention measures will continue to be implemented to achieve the water supply goal of "no zoned water supply for domestic use and stable industrial production unaffected" by the end of June. The agency also calls on all sectors of society to cherish water resources together and overcome the dry season hand in hand. (Editor: Yang Lan-xuan) 1150408
