Hiroki Uchida, Representative Director of the Japan Miss Contest Association, receives a large number of DMs (direct messages) on Instagram every day regarding the Miss Contest.

These messages are not only words of encouragement.

Over the years, we have also received many critical opinions and comments on issues such as responses to the novel coronavirus, criticism over lookism, compliance, lesson content, bikini judging, and fairness in judging.

Therefore, we have reviewed, categorized, and analyzed DMs, inquiries, and feedback sent directly to Hiroki Uchida and the contest operations from 2021 to 2026.

Top Feedback and Inquiries Over the Past 5 Years

1st Place: Contest Operations During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The most common feedback concerned holding contests and conducting lessons during the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Especially at regional events, we received numerous comments on:

・ Whether or not events should be held ・ Infection prevention measures ・ Concerns about travel and transportation ・ Worries expressed by parents

The association has consistently consulted with local governments and venues to implement safety measures while continuing contest operations.

2nd Place: Feedback on Lookism (Appearance-Based Evaluation)

In recent years, we have seen a growing number of comments questioning whether the Miss Contest promotes lookism.

At the same time, today’s contest evaluates participants not only on appearance, but also on:

・ Speeches ・ Social activities ・ Expressiveness ・ Personality ・ Communication skills

Recognizing the changing values in society, we will continue evolving the contest to meet the expectations of the times.

3rd Place: Feedback on Lesson Content and Instruction Methods

With rising awareness of compliance issues, we have received increasing feedback from parents regarding lesson content and teaching methods.

The association continues to review and improve its instructional approaches, prioritizing safety and consideration for participants.

4th Place: Feedback on Bikini Performance

The bikini performance, implemented as part of our program to align with international standards, has drawn diverse feedback, particularly from parents.

The association continues to examine how to balance international standards with Japanese cultural values, while respecting participants’ personal choices.

5th Place: Feedback on Judging and Rankings

We have also received many inquiries and opinions regarding the selection of judges, judging results, and final rankings.

The association considers fairness and transparency as key priorities and continues improving judging criteria and systems.

Japan Miss Contest Association Comment

Through this analysis, we have once again realized how greatly societal expectations and values toward the Miss Contest have changed.

We do not regard the feedback we receive as mere complaints, but as valuable input for improving the contest.

Moving forward, we will continue engaging in dialogue with participants, parents, and local communities to shape a new Miss Contest that meets the needs of today’s society.

Hiroki Uchida Comment

There were days when reading DMs left me feeling down.

But instead of dismissing these voices as criticism, I see them as valuable insights into what society is asking for.

Over these past five years, the Miss Contest has undergone significant shifts in what society expects.

That’s exactly why we believe we must continue evolving.
