Background of the Research Implementation

In recent years, junior high school English education in Japan has placed increasing importance on developing speaking skills, particularly in areas like "speaking" and "interaction." While the revision of the curriculum guidelines has been accompanied by the development of learning environments utilizing ICT and AI, class time remains limited, making it difficult for each student to engage in sufficient speaking practice. Under these circumstances, the establishment of a system to supplement students' learning opportunities outside of class and support personalized learning is an urgent issue.

IntEx Lab is working to develop effective ways to utilize AI support tools and verify their effects to address this challenge. A previous study using the AI English learning app "WorldClassroom," provided by HelloWorld Inc., with which IntEx Lab is affiliated, demonstrated that AI support tools can have an educational effect on junior high school students' English learning and can support students' autonomous learning.

Based on this, the current research was conducted using data from "WorldClassroom" to clarify, based on second language acquisition theory, what specific outcomes the assurance of "practice quality and quantity" using AI brings to the improvement of junior high school students' English proficiency.

Furthermore, both the previous study and the current research are based on anonymized statistical data provided by HelloWorld Inc.
