The Oirase-Towada Utilization Council and the Oirase Gorge Ecotourism Project Executive Committee have been continuously implementing traffic restrictions for private vehicles on the Oirase Gorge section of National Route 102 since 2003 to preserve the natural environment and alleviate traffic congestion.

This project is part of a social experiment aimed at realizing the vision of the entire gorge as a "Natural History Museum," looking ahead to the future after the opening of the Aobunayama Bypass. In Reiwa 8 (2026), the restrictions will be enforced from Monday, September 7th, to Sunday, September 13th, moving the schedule up by more than a month from the usual late October.

As the timing is significantly different from previous years, we ask that all tourists and travel industry professionals take careful note of these dates when planning trips and arranging for vehicles.

Purpose and Background of the Schedule Change

This experiment aims to verify a model for tourism that balances the preservation of the natural environment with its appropriate use. By restricting vehicle traffic, we aim to reduce the impact of exhaust fumes on the trees and create an environment where pedestrians can safely enjoy nature in peace and quiet.

This year, the experiment will be conducted in the first half of September to test the optimization of the traffic environment during the "early autumn in Oirase," avoiding the peak autumn foliage season.
