Director Emerald Fennell states that this film sublimates the sensations she felt when she first read Emily Brontë's original novel at the age of 14. On the other hand, Margot Robbie, who plays Catherine, revealed she had never read the original novel and learned about "Wuthering Heights" through the script Fennell wrote, commenting, "I am glad the Emerald version of 'Wuthering Heights' was made.
