BOISE, Idaho – May 5, 2026 – Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) today announced the start of shipments for the Micron® 6600 ION SSD, boasting the world's largest capacity of 245TB for SSDs currently available on the market. This product contributes to improving rack-scale storage density in data centers and is designed to support a wide range of workloads including AI, cloud, enterprise, and hyperscale, such as next-generation AI data lakes and cloud-scale file/object storage. The 245TB Micron 6600 ION E3.L reduces the number of racks required to achieve equivalent raw storage capacity by 82% compared to HDD-based deployments*1. It also features Micron® G9 QLC NAND, which is at least one generation ahead of competing quad-level cell (QLC) technologies used in data center SSDs, revolutionizing large-capacity data center storage*2. This allows customers to save space, store and process significantly more data than before, and reduce power consumption and cooling loads while maintaining the performance required for large-scale, data-intensive workloads.
Jeremy Werner, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Micron Technology's Core Data Center Business Unit, stated, "The expansion of AI workloads has led to a surge in shared data, and the share of storage in data centers continues to shift from HDDs to SSDs. The Micron 6600 ION, achieving 245TB in a single SSD, demonstrates that solid-state storage is the optimal choice for modern data centers. Especially as securing power becomes a critical constraint in scaling AI infrastructure, this groundbreaking capacity provides data center operators with a crucial new means to improve total cost of ownership (TCO) on a per-rack basis."
Jeff Janukowicz, Research Vice President for IDC's SSD and Enabling Technologies, commented, "The rapid growth of AI datasets is shifting storage economics from individual drives to rack-level efficiency. Operators need to further increase effective capacity per rack amidst stringent power and cooling constraints. Micron's 245TB drive provides the density needed to scale AI data pipelines without expanding the data center footprint. Predictable performance, high power efficiency, and high capacity are essential for building cost-efficient AI infrastructure."
New Economics in Quarter-Petabyte Scale Data Center Storage
The 245TB Micron 6600 ION SSD is available in both U.2 and E3.L form factors for high-capacity storage. The reduced physical footprint and increased capacity per drive simplify operations and data center management, while also leading to fewer points of failure and reduced maintenance burden.
It also brings significant transformation in terms of power consumption. The 245TB Micron 6600 ION SSD operates at a maximum of 30 watts, reducing power consumption by approximately half compared to an equivalent capacity HDD configuration*3. Furthermore, these power efficiency improvements contribute to reducing energy usage, cooling loads, and carbon emissions, supporting data center sustainability initiatives. These are critical priorities for operators worldwide amidst increasing environmental and cost pressures.
Travis Vigil, Senior Vice President of Product Management, Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) at Dell Technologies, said, "With the expansion of AI workloads, data center capacity is approaching its limits. However, significantly increasing the storage capacity per rack can comprehensively reduce power consumption, floor space, and operational burden. The 245TB drive, to be featured in Dell storage systems for AI, achieves this. For customers building AI and large-scale data center environments, this is a significant evolution that can greatly reduce total cost of ownership."
