Pets First Holdings Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Meguro-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Haruhiko Sakamoto) publishes the 'Pets First CSR Activity Report' to communicate to more people the CSR activities implemented under the philosophy of 'Pets always come first'.
As part of our CSR activity 'Pets always come first Project', with the cooperation of NPO One Collection (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Yuichiro Dotai), we conducted an outreach class at Nitobe Bunka Elementary School / After School on Monday, March 30, 2026. In this outreach class, in addition to animal welfare education through introducing pet shop work by our veterinarian, we provided an opportunity to learn about the roles of assistance dogs and how to interact with them properly, with the cooperation of the Japan Assistance Dog Association (Asahi-ku, Yokohama City, Representative Director: Yoshiko Park, hereafter Japan Assistance Dog Association).
■ Background of the Initiative
Our company operates the pet shop 'P's-first' and provides a happy pet life. As a company involved with the irreplaceable lives of pets, we are working to promote understanding by conveying to customers the responsibility of welcoming a precious life as a family member and ensuring they observe lifelong care.
Also, as part of our CSR activities, we have been conducting training support and awareness expansion activities for assistance dogs, including hearing dogs, since 2016. Assistance dogs are entities that support users' lives and also provide an opportunity to think about the relationship between people and animals.
Based on these ideas and initiatives, this class was implemented to provide children, who will lead the next generation, with an opportunity to actually touch pets and think about animal welfare, and to spread understanding of assistance dogs in the local community.
■ Class Content
1. Pet Shop Work Introduction & Matching Experience
First, our veterinarian introduced the importance of pet health management cherished at 'P's-first' and 'the job of connecting pets and families', which is one of the important roles of a pet shop.
On the day, as a 'Pet Shop Clerk Experience', the children learned about how to properly interact with pets and the health management methods implemented at 'P's-first' while mixing in a quiz.
Our company hands over pets on the premise of lifelong care, and we conveyed to the children that a pet is a precious life and a 'family member' at the same time, and that 'pets and families living happily together forever = lifelong care'.
Also, in the matching experience, they discussed suitable combinations of pets and families while sharing ideas in groups.
We saw them actively exchanging opinions, such as 'This pet is an energetic dog, so a lively family would be good' and 'This is a spoiled cat, so a family that can be together during the day would be good'.
Through this experience, we conveyed the responsibility of dealing with life and the importance of the perspective of considering the optimal relationship for both owners and pets.
2. Class and Demonstration on Assistance Dogs
Next, with the cooperation of the Japan Assistance Dog Association, we conducted the 'Know More, Assistance Dogs' class to learn about the roles of assistance dogs.
Two users living with a hearing dog and an assistance dog, which our company supported in training*1, served as instructors and explained to the children the roles of assistance dogs, their daily lives, and scenes of their activities. Both instructors are employees belonging to the Pets First Group, and they deepened the children's understanding through stories based on their actual lives.
In the class, we also introduced that while the acceptance of assistance dogs in public facilities is mandated by the Act on Assistance Dogs for Physically Disabled Persons, there are still cases where assistance dog users are refused entry today. The children listened earnestly about the importance of spreading understanding of assistance dogs and how to respond when seeing them in town throughout society.
After that, a demonstration was held by an assistance dog, a hearing dog, and the two users. The assistance dog showed the action of picking up and handing over an object when the user dropped it, and the hearing dog showed the action of notifying the user of the kitchen timer's sound, introducing specific roles that support daily life.
The children observed this and seemed to deepen their understanding that assistance dogs are essential partners that support users' lives.
