The original painting of the Victor mark was painted by British artist Francis Barraud in 1889. Francis’s older brother, Mark H. Barraud, had a very clever Fox Terrier he affectionately called “Nipper,” and after Mark passed away, Francis took in and raised Nipper together with Mark’s son. One day, Francis played a recording of his late brother’s voice on a phonograph he happened to have at home. Nipper listened with curiosity in front of the trumpet, as if listening intently to his beloved late master’s voice. Touched by the sight of Nipper, Francis immediately picked up his brush and painted the scene. The phonograph at that time was a cylinder type capable of both recording and playback, but it was later repainted to a disc type. He titled the painting “His Master’s Voice.”
The lovely figure of Nipper listening nostalgically to his late master’s voice moved Emile Berliner, the inventor of the disc gramophone, who registered this masterpiece as a trademark in 1900. Since then, this prestigious mark has been deeply trusted and loved by everyone as a symbol of the highest technology and quality.
