Sustainable and ethical. New Zealand wine you want to drink "now"
With a share of only 1% of global wine production, New Zealand wine is actually rare. New Zealand has a lower population density than Japan and is blessed with a spacious and majestic natural environment. The transparent taste and high quality nurtured under its rich earth and cool climate are attracting attention from wine lovers worldwide.
New Zealand promotes sustainable winemaking nationwide, and currently, over 98% of the country's vineyard area is sustainably certified. Active efforts in organic certification and biodynamic farming are also prominent, making environmentally friendly winemaking a major characteristic of New Zealand wine.
Furthermore, New Zealand wine, which boasts world-class quality and diverse varieties, has many winemakers who are attracting attention in global trends, and its delicate and transparent taste is appealing. In particular, the refreshing acidity of Sauvignon Blanc and the light mouthfeel of Pinot Noir pair exceptionally well with Japanese cuisine and modern dishes that highlight ingredients, and are highly evaluated in a wide range of restaurants. However, awareness and offering opportunities are still limited on menus in Japanese restaurants. Through this campaign, we aim to provide an opportunity for more people to feel the charm of New Zealand wine as its availability increases.
[Column] Recommended dishes? New Zealand wine perfect for Japan's diverse dining tables
New Zealand wine ranges widely from refreshing whites to delicate reds and food-friendly rosés, and its great appeal is that it can be paired with various meals, including Japanese, Western, Chinese, meat, and seafood dishes. Here we introduce the characteristics of each grape variety and recommended dishes.
◆ Sauvignon Blanc
The most recommended for the upcoming hot and humid season is Sauvignon Blanc. It is the most famous variety representing New Zealand. It features concentrated freshness, refreshing acidity, and a cool aroma. It pairs well not only with seafood like salmon and oysters but also with light dishes like dim sum. Even with the same variety, the expression differs by winery, so tasting and comparing is also recommended.
◆ Riesling
Riesling, with its gorgeous aroma and clean acidity, pairs well with Asian cuisine. It naturally complements spices and sweet-and-spicy flavors, and when paired with tempura, it tightens the taste as if a squeeze of lemon was added.
◆ Chardonnay
Chardonnay, with its richness and elegance, pairs well with seafood dishes like scallops and crab cakes. It also goes well with white meats like chicken and pork, and mild-tasting dishes like mizutaki (chicken hot pot). It is a variety that adds a moderate thickness to the entire dish while embracing the umami of the ingredients.
◆ Rosé
Rosé is a versatile wine that is easy to pair with vegetable dishes and dishes using tomatoes. It is perfect for dishes that enjoy the sweetness of vegetables like ratatouille, and tomato sauce pizza. Combining the charms of white and red, it blends well with casual meals.
◆ Syrah
Syrah, which has been gaining attention among sommeliers in recent years, features a spicy and deep taste. It pairs well with meat dishes where the umami spreads the more you chew, such as rosemary-flavored lamb and venison. It also complements teriyaki chicken and tomato sauce bolognese, embracing the robustness of the dishes.
◆ Pinot Noir
Delicate and gorgeous Pinot Noir is an impressive and unique existence among New Zealand wines. In addition to elegant meat dishes like roasted whole turkey and quail, it pairs well with dishes using soy sauce, such as tuna and sukiyaki. Behind its rich aroma is the presence of furaneol, one of the aromatic compounds also found in strawberries and soy sauce. It easily resonates with dishes using soy sauce, bringing a new way to enjoy Japanese cuisine.
◆ Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with their strong fruitiness and concentration, are recommended for dishes with robust flavors. They pair well not only with meat dishes like beef cutlets and hamburgers but also with eel coated in sweet-and-spicy sauce. These are the red wines to choose when you want to add satisfaction to a meal.
Please find your favorite bottle and a delicious combination.
