SUMADORI Inc. (Head office: Sumida-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Tetsuya Takahashi), as part of the "Shibuya Smart Drinking Project" which addresses social issues in Shibuya Ward and strives to create a society where diverse ways of drinking are respected, will hold the experiential exhibition event "Time Travel Exhibition - A Journey Through Eras, Starting with a Drink," in collaboration with the seminar of Associate Professor Satoshi Nakanishi at Atomi University. The event will take place from May 13th (Wednesday) to May 31st (Sunday) at "SUMADORI Meets," which opened on April 3rd. This project was conceived by students from Associate Professor Satoshi Nakanishi's seminar at Atomi University, based on the real-life feelings of contemporary young people who feel "perplexed" by drinking occasions and want to "find their own way to enjoy." A survey conducted independently revealed that approximately 70% had "never felt the historical background of alcohol," and about 90% responded that they "would like to find a way to drink that suits them perfectly." This indicates that while opportunities to learn about the history of alcohol have been scarce, many people are interested in finding their own suitable ways to enjoy it. Furthermore, the project focused on the idea that "humanity has freely changed its relationship with alcohol according to the times." Through the creation of diverse drinking cultures from ancient times to the present, the event aims to be a place where smart drinking can be more naturally embraced as a personal choice, by re-learning about alcohol not just as a mere luxury item, but within its historical and cultural context. Inside the venue, visitors can learn how people have changed their relationship with alcohol in response to different historical backgrounds and environments, by exploring ancient times tracing the origins of sake, the Middle Ages when wine culture spread, the Age of Discovery which was intertwined with arduous voyages, the Edo period when unique Japanese izakaya culture developed, and the Prohibition era when new ways to enjoy cocktails were sought amidst restrictions. By looking back at this history, the exhibition offers an experience to discover one's own suitable alcohol and drinking style while enjoying cocktails inspired by each era.
