Since Reiwa 3, the Japan Sports Agency has established the 'Excellent Municipalities Award for Sports and Health Town Development' (Spomachi! Award) to recognize and widely promote innovative initiatives by local governments that actively utilize sports for regional revitalization and community development. To date, a total of 114 municipalities have been honored.

This year, the Agency is once again accepting applications for municipal initiatives and will host the 'Spomachi! Award 2026.'

Award-winning municipalities will receive official certificates from the Japan Sports Agency at the award ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, November 17.

The Japan Sports Agency aims to support awardees in successfully implementing their initiatives and contributing to regional revitalization.

Eligibility

Local governments that are actively working on 'town development' utilizing sports and have established a sustainable organizational framework for continuous implementation.

※ Joint applications from multiple local public entities are permitted.

※ Municipalities previously awarded may apply again this year, provided the new proposal is substantially different from their past awarded initiatives.

Late September: Preliminary selection of awardees

Mid-October: Submission of public relations and promotional materials

Early November: Final determination of awardees
