Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI), a global technology leader in energy efficiency, decarbonization, thermal management, and performance improvement for critical facilities essential to societal life, released its 2026 Sustainability Report on April 22, 2026, coinciding with Earth Day. Furthermore, Johnson Controls designated April as "Earth Month," and this year, approximately 90,000 employees globally are participating in various environmental awareness activities.

The Sustainability Report highlights key achievements, including over $9.5 billion in energy and operational cost savings for customers, and the avoidance of emissions equivalent to approximately 6 million U.S. households. These cost reductions have contributed to capital creation that can be reinvested into strategic growth. The report also states a 46% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions compared to 2017, a 33% reduction in Scope 3 emissions associated with the use of its products, and that 91% of its global electricity consumption was sourced or offset with carbon-free electricity.

Specific examples cited in the report include an annual energy cost reduction of $700,000 by cutting heating fuel usage by 69% through a chiller and heat pump upgrade project at Children’s of Alabama in Alabama, USA. Additionally, the introduction of the AI-enabled OpenBlue platform led to an operational cost reduction of $200,000, resulting in total annual cost savings of approximately $900,000. In another example, in Stuttgart-Münster, Germany, a large-scale heat pump supplies carbon-neutral heat to 10,000 households, reducing over 15,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to the emissions of about 3,100 cars per year.

Johnson Controls also conducts an internal "Earth Month" campaign every April, targeting all global employees to promote understanding and action towards sustainability. This campaign aims to reconfirm the social role of the company's business and to enhance the knowledge and proactive participation of each employee. In Japan, this year, in collaboration with the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation Nature Conservation Society of Japan, an online seminar on the theme of "Nature Positive" was held. The seminar focused on deepening understanding of biodiversity conservation, which is gaining importance for global sustainability, in addition to climate change countermeasures closely related to the company's business. Approximately 200 employees participated. Furthermore, employees, along with their families and executives including Representative Director and President Taro Matsushita, actively participated in satoyama (traditional rural landscape) conservation activities in Minuma Rice Fields in Saitama Prefecture.
