The Suntory Cultural Foundation (Chairperson: Shingo Torii) is now accepting applications for the 2026 "Overseas Publication Grant," as detailed below.
This grant program aims to promote understanding of Japan abroad by providing financial support for the translation and publication of high-quality Japanese academic research or books about Japan into foreign languages. The total grant budget is 7 million yen, with approximately 10 projects expected to be selected, maintaining the same scale as previous years.
To date, this program has supported 370 publications in 31 languages, including English, introducing a wide range of Japanese culture and academic achievements to the international community.
- Details -
1. Eligible Projects:
In principle, the grant targets excellent research in humanities and social sciences written in Japanese for international dissemination, or books about Japan that contribute to understanding Japan overseas. The grant should be the deciding factor that enables the translation and publication. Works must be published in a language other than Japanese after the grant is awarded. Applicants must have an agreement with a reliable publisher ensuring high-quality translation and publication at the time of application.
2. Support Details:
Grants cover translation and publication costs. The maximum grant is 1/2 of the total production cost, capped at 1 million yen. However, considering the higher costs of English translation and publication, English projects can receive up to 2/3 of the total cost, capped at 2 million yen. (Original works written in English are treated the same as other languages: 1/2 cost up to 1 million yen.)
3. Application Method:
Fill out the foundation's designated form and submit it strictly by mail.
4. Obtaining Application Forms:
Guidelines and forms can be downloaded from the Overseas Publication Grant page on the foundation's website.
