knotLight is a new 'form of light' that is soft like a string and can be freely shaped. It was developed as a product that, while being a light source, does not have a fixed use, allowing it to be wrapped around the body, tied to a bag, or displayed in a room.
This crowdfunding campaign served as the first full-scale market validation for knotLight. With the achievement of its goal, Art and Program Inc. will advance knotLight from an exhibition piece to a product delivered to actual users, entering the sales and promotion phase.
Development Background
knotLight intertwined with the 'Grid Pouch,' a dedicated accessory for knotLight
The development of knotLight began with the initiative to 'make clothes themselves glow,' prompted by the joining of a fashion designer. To naturally connect fashion and technology, we explored ways to incorporate light into clothing. However, integrating luminous components into garments presented numerous challenges, including comfort, weight, washability, maintenance, and ease of daily handling.
Through trial and error, we arrived at 'string' as a concept, which is a subsidiary material in clothing manufacturing. A string naturally integrates with clothing and can be removed when necessary. Furthermore, its versatile applications—tying, wrapping, draping, weaving—allow light to be incorporated according to the wearer's style and movement, rather than being fixed to the garment itself.
By transforming light into a 'string,' knotLight's applications expanded beyond fashion. It serves not only as an accessory to complement clothing but also shows various expressions depending on the user's imagination, such as tying it to a bag, decorating a room, or taking it out for a night walk or outdoor activities. It is a new 'form of light' that, starting from fashion, extends into daily life and living spaces.
From Exhibition Piece to Product
First unveiled at DESIGNART TOKYO 2025
The product brand 'aprg®' by Art and Program Inc. aims to provide new discoveries and richness in daily life through technology, expanding the freedom to create, the freedom to know, and the freedom to wear by fusing products and art.
Born from aprg® is the soft, freely tieable light product 'knotLight.' Development involved continuous improvements through exhibition activities and prototyping. It was first unveiled at DESIGNART TOKYO in 2025, receiving significant response from many visitors and creators. Exhibitions were also held at the '46th ASIA FASHION FAIR Tokyo 2025 Autumn' and 'TOKYO CREATIVE COLLECTION 2025.' Subsequently, through repeated prototyping and verification, we explored its potential as 'wearable light' and 'light to play with freely.'
The achievement of this crowdfunding campaign marks the first step in demonstrating that this potential is also supported in the market. Based on these results, Art and Program Inc. will shift knotLight from the development-centric phase to the sales and promotion phase. Moving forward, while continuing product improvements, we will deliver it to more people through e-commerce sales and exhibition activities.
