IDEAS FOR GOOD, a web magazine that gathers ideas for making society "better," operated by Artiql Inc. (formerly Hach Inc., headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Yu Kato, hereinafter "Artiql"), has renewed its website in June 2026.
Background and Purpose of the Renewal
The web magazine IDEAS FOR GOOD was launched in 2016 with the desire to make society a "more" wonderful place. To date, we have reported on the initiatives of companies, local governments, practitioners, and citizens tackling social issues around the world, focusing on themes such as climate change, the circular economy, gender, human rights, communities, education, and technology.
Amidst a constant stream of news about problems like wars, disasters, and scandals, IDEAS FOR GOOD has shed light not only on the issues themselves. We highlight the creative practices of people trying to change the future beyond these issues, the sparks of hope that are undeniably budding, however small, and the ideas that make us think, "I want to see a world like this."
We aim to deliver inspiration to as many people as possible and create opportunities for the next action. Through our articles, we want to advance society toward a better future. With this wish in mind, IDEAS FOR GOOD has delivered hopeful ideas and people's voices for nearly 10 years.
However, the challenges surrounding us are now complexly intertwined, including the climate crisis, social division, inequality, the fragility of democracy, and the rapid advancement of AI. Initiatives that appear hopeful to some may leave others with anxiety or unease. What can be called "GOOD"? It is an era where even that cannot be easily defined as it once was.
Furthermore, as generative AI and giant platforms significantly change the information environment, we are again being asked what media should record, whose voices should be preserved in society, and what kind of dialogue should be fostered. Precisely because it is an era where vast amounts of information flow by, we believe there is meaning in carefully preserving the small voices from the corners of society, the trial-and-error accumulated on the ground, and the words of those who challenge themselves with faith in the future.
There is no single correct answer to these problems. Therefore, IDEAS FOR GOOD will evolve into a media that not only presents solutions unilaterally but also thinks, dialogues, and creates together with readers, practitioners, companies, and local governments about the question, "What kind of future do we want?"
In the crowdfunding campaign "IDEAS FOR GOOD 2.0" conducted in 2025, we received support totaling 6,673,500 yen from 378 individuals. We proposed a new form of media that reweaves "crisis" into "hope" and "division" into "connection."
This website renewal is the first step in our journey from "journalism that shows solutions" to "journalism of inquiry" that embraces each person's truth, and from a media that is "read" to a media that thinks about and weaves the desired future together.
New IDEAS FOR GOOD Site Top Page
Three Features of the New Site
1. From a Media to "Read" to a Media Where Dialogue and Co-creation Emerge
The new IDEAS FOR GOOD is not a place where you finish after reading an article. Through events, workshops, podcasts, feature projects, and communities, we will foster a space where readers, companies, local governments, and practitioners can meet and think together.
As an entry point, the top page adopts a structure that allows switching between "READ" and "MEET." Whether you want to read articles carefully or meet someone and participate in a dialogue or experiential event, you can naturally reach the content you need according to your mood and purpose at the time.
There is a significant distance between knowing about an issue and actually creating change. To bridge this gap even slightly, IDEAS FOR GOOD aims to be a "public square" that not only delivers information but also allows people with different perspectives to dialogue and connect to the next action.
2. A Warm Media Experience. Comfortable White Space for Everyone
Information is neatly organized, allowing the power of articles, photographs, and each word to be received directly. This is supported by a minimal layout with ample white space.
The base color remains monochrome, but the contrast has been slightly softened, and a slightly lighter black than jet black is used for text and color blocks. Instead of a stark white background, a subtle cream color is used. By imbuing the screen with warmth, we have prioritized a comfortable experience where anyone can read, think, and pause at their own pace without feeling rushed, regardless of age, status, or when they are reading—a sense of inclusivity that leaves no one behind.
3. Intuitive and Easy-to-Use UI
"The content is good, but it's hard to read," "I don't know where to look." Based on reader feedback gathered during the renewal, we have redesigned the path to information from scratch.
We have simplified the information hierarchy and created intuitive navigation so that it's clear where to find things. Whether you are visiting for the first time or have been a long-time supporter, you can reach the article or experience you're looking for without getting lost. Not only is it comfortable to find what you're looking for quickly, but it also reduces unnecessary communication and loading, thereby lowering server load and CO2 emissions associated with communication. We aimed for a UI that balances usability and environmental friendliness.
Logo Renewal
We have also updated the IDEAS FOR GOOD logo to be more memorable and to convey the essence of IDEAS FOR GOOD.
While inheriting the previous elements, we have refined the relationship between the symbol and the logotype to enhance visibility and presence. We have polished it into an iconic form that is instantly memorable and can be used consistently in various contexts, from social media icons to large visuals.
Our intention was to visually convey our stance as a "media moving towards positive change" in a natural way. The logo aims to convey at a glance our commitment to advancing society little by little with small ideas.
A Message on the Renewal
Erika Toyama, Editor-in-Chief, IDEAS FOR GOOD
The work of creating articles is sometimes strange. Immediately after publication, we can hardly see who is reading where. Yet, years later, some people tell us, "I've been reading since I was a student," "I actually visited that place because of an IDEAS article," "That article made me rethink my work," or "I tried the idea you introduced in my own community."
One article doesn't change society immediately. However, it can leave a small sense of unease or curiosity in someone, and through their choices and encounters, it can reach unexpected places. I believe the words delivered by the editorial department take on new meanings in the readers' lives and grow into further questions and actions.
With this renewal, we wanted to make these unseen exchanges a little more tangible. Encounters with articles lead to dialogue with others. Dialogue becomes an opportunity to articulate one's own questions. And those questions lead to small actions in their respective places.
IDEAS FOR GOOD will continue to be a media outlet that delivers real-world practices from around the globe, allowing readers to encounter their own questions and find their next steps in their own places.
Yuko Nagano, Chief Design Officer, Artiql Inc.
The most time-consuming part was not the colors or shapes, but "listening."
This renewal began not with design, but with carefully listening to 12 individuals—readers and practitioners—one by one. This was the very start of a project that took over a year.
We didn't just listen about usability. We asked about what information they search for, what confuses them, what articles move their hearts. What kind of presence does IDEAS FOR GOOD have in their daily lives? Overlapping this with my own experiences as a former reader, we redesigned with people at the center.
Our goal was to help people find what they're looking for without hesitation. And to serendipitously encounter unexpected ideas and opportunities, and to encounter questions and think. We have re-drawn the paths to information to achieve both. A design that doesn't confuse is comfortable, and at the same time, it reduces unnecessary communication and loading, contributing to lower server load and CO2 emissions. Usability and environmental friendliness are not separate things.
The design tone was also subtly adjusted to match that comfort. While the base remains monochrome, we chose a slightly lighter black than jet black for text and color blocks, and a cream-colored white rather than a stark white for the background. This is to imbue the entire screen with a quiet warmth.
Design is not just about making things look good. It's about ensuring everyone can use it comfortably and that it doesn't burden the planet. As part of that responsibility, we will continue to use renewable energy for operations, regularly estimate CO2 emissions, and strive to improve accessibility in compliance with WCAG 2.0 and JIS X 8341-3:2016 quality standards.
We hope that this new IDEAS FOR GOOD will reach more people, be read more deeply, and become an opportunity not just to read, but to meet and gather with others. Beyond that, we hope it will enable us to regain hope in our future. Through design, we wish to foster such a space.
Future Developments
1. Media Where You Can Participate in Inquiry
IDEAS FOR GOOD will increasingly provide opportunities as a "media where you can participate in inquiry," going beyond simply reading articles.
Through events such as screenings of our original documentary film "Repair Cafe," editorial meetings and events where readers and the editorial department bring their questions, and "Experience for Good" tours to social issue sites both domestically and internationally, we will open up spaces to think, dialogue, and connect to action together regarding society and the future.
In the immediate future, on July 9, 2026, we will hold "IDEAS After Talk Vol.1" in Akasaka, Tokyo, where readers and the editorial department will discuss articles. The theme for the first session is "Between 'Working' and 'Living.'" Using articles on topics like 2.5 days off per week and 4-day workweeks as a starting point, participants and the editorial department will bring their questions about work styles and daily life.
We will foster times like these across various regions, not to find definitive answers, but to re-examine our own choices and the future shape of society from a slightly different angle by encountering different experiences and values.
2. Moving Between Theory and Practice (On-site)
In the co-creation business development lab "IDEAS FOR GOOD Business Design Lab," we will connect the global case studies, philosophies, and on-site voices cultivated by IDEAS FOR GOOD as a media outlet to business and regional practices.
We will provide support for issues related to sustainability, the circular economy, and community development through research, workshops, site visits/fieldwork, human resource development, business development, and communication design. We will not stop at simply presenting ideals or concepts, but will test, learn, sometimes pause, and rethink on the ground. By moving between ideals and practice, we will shape changes for a "better" society together with you.
3. Continuing to Preserve Voices for the Future
Precisely because it is an era where AI and platforms are significantly changing the information environment, IDEAS FOR GOOD will carefully record and pass on to the next generation the small voices from the corners of society, the challenges that are not yet widely known, and the wisdom rooted in local communities.
The future is not something that someone will complete for us. It is gradually shaped through the accumulation of the experiences, imaginations, questions, and trial-and-error of diverse people. IDEAS FOR GOOD will continue to deliver hopeful ideas and foster spaces and systems for people to think about, dialogue on, and take action toward the future from their respective positions.
