Allergan Aesthetics Applies for Approval for Botulinum Toxin Type A for Forehead Lines in Japan

Allergan Aesthetics (AbbVie GK, HQ: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Emily Dumarc-Diez), a leader in advanced medical aesthetics, has submitted an application for medical device manufacturing and marketing approval for an additional indication of botulinum toxin type A for the treatment of forehead lines in adults.

Forehead lines are a primary type of upper facial expression wrinkle, caused by the repetitive contraction of facial muscles and aging. Wrinkles formed by repeated facial expressions can become visible even at rest over time. These expression lines not only affect the impression of perceived age but have also been reported to influence psychological aspects, including self-esteem, body image, and interpersonal communication.

This application is based on results from multiple clinical trials, including a domestic Phase III study involving adult Japanese patients and an overseas Phase III study.

About Botulinum Toxin Type A Botulinum toxin type A binds to receptors at motor or sympathetic nerve terminals and is taken up by the nerve terminals, where it inhibits the release of acetylcholine, thereby blocking cholinergic neurotransmission. This mechanism of action results in localized muscle relaxation. Intramuscular injection of botulinum toxin type A causes a transient, gradual chemical denervation of the muscle, leading to local relaxation and/or decreased activity. Chemical denervation is temporary, and nerve function recovers over time as the neurotransmitter function at the nerve terminals is restored.
