Japanese market research firm Axetimes announced the release of its report, “Seed Technologies and Market Overview of Next-Generation Power Generation & Energy Storage 2026 [No.2 Comparative and Analytical Edition],” on April 15, 2026. The report provides a cross-sectional analysis of 50 next-generation power generation and energy storage technologies and includes an Excel dataset designed to support companies, business planning teams, and R&D departments in identifying promising technologies and business opportunities. This press release highlights findings for 14 energy storage technologies. According to the report, demand for energy storage is rising alongside global energy demand growth, electrification, and the spread of renewable energy. More than half of the surveyed storage technologies are expected to begin forming markets from the late 2020s to the early 2030s. Among device-related technologies, next-generation lithium-ion batteries are estimated to have a potential market size of JPY 15 trillion, while all-solid-state batteries are estimated at JPY 10 trillion, driven mainly by EV and automotive battery applications. Sodium-ion batteries and metal anode batteries are each estimated at JPY 1 trillion. In equipment and plant-related technologies, redox flow batteries are estimated at JPY 1.5 trillion, liquid air energy storage at JPY 2 trillion, and ocean inverse dams at JPY 1 trillion. Axetimes notes that large-scale long-duration energy storage systems such as liquid air energy storage and gravity energy storage are under development, while next-generation approaches such as adiabatic compressed air energy storage are also emerging. The report is priced from JPY 99,000 and will also be offered as lecture and seminar content for companies, business groups, and municipalities promoting decarbonization and the circular economy. Purchasers are scheduled to be invited to an explanatory webinar on July 27, 2026.
