i-Pairs Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Mamoru Ito) is pleased to announce that 'n-Links Retarget', motion capture correction software ideal for real-time capture such as virtual character distribution, is now compatible with the 'VICON' optical motion capture system.
Plugins for Unreal Engine and Unity are also available, allowing for easy integration.
Currently, the following motion capture systems are supported:
- Xsens (Inertial Motion Capture System)
- OptiTrack (Optical Motion Capture System)
- Captury (Markerless Motion Capture System)
- VICON (Optical Motion Capture System)
With support for major motion capture systems, 'n-Links Retarget' can be utilized in various environments.
■ About 'n-Links Retarget'
Retargeting is essential for virtual characters. 'n-Links Retarget' applies the skeleton of a human performer to a CG character seamlessly using proprietary know-how. It can process at a high speed of up to 120 times per second, making it ideal for real-time motion capture distribution.
It resolves the instability issues encountered during real-time operation with conventional retargeting software, achieving stability and redundancy that can withstand long recording sessions. Fine adjustments can also be made with simple operations, contributing to reduced workload at motion capture sites.
Even in motion capture scenarios other than real-time distribution, the software is highly useful for previewing, as it allows users to visually confirm the intended movements of the CG character after retargeting.
- Supports loading of various 3D model files such as FBX/VRM.
- Natural retargeting. Easy manual correction for head and body orientation, foot grounding, arms, etc.
- Allows preview of retargeted movements on screen. Supports VRM physics.
- Supports receiving motion from multiple sources. Mixing Xsens/OptiTrack/Captury/VICON is possible.
- Capable of sending motion retargeting data at a high frame rate of up to 120fps.
- Can simultaneously send retargeted data to multiple rendering systems.
- Real-time synchronization between two units for backup is possible. Synchronization between Windows and Mac is also supported.
■ About the 'n-Links' Series
This series is the culmination of our company's unique know-how cultivated through numerous motion capture recording sessions, including live performances by VTubers and CG characters. It is new virtual character support software equipped with a user-friendly interface, light operation, and stability that can withstand long recording sessions.
Our goal in developing and providing this software is to enable stable and low-cost real-time distribution of content by reducing the technical burden (equipment and personnel) and the possibility of system troubles that are often concerns with conventional real-time motion capture in 3D model content production.
Currently, we offer two types of software: the motion capture correction application 'n-Links Retarget' and the general-purpose facial expression manipulation application 'n-Links Facial'. Please watch this video for an introduction to each software.
We plan to continue developing and deploying various software to support virtual characters and motion capture within the 'n-Links' series.
■ Collaboration with Yamaha Corporation's 'GPAP' Enables Recording and Post-Editing of Motion and Facial Expression Data
We have jointly developed a new technology with Yamaha Corporation, which develops multimedia data recording and playback technology 'GPAP (G-PAP)', enabling the general recording, editing, and playback of motion capture data.
'n-Links Retarget' outputs retargeted motion capture data in OSC (Open Sound Control) format. By receiving this data, 'GPAP' allows for recording, playback, cut-and-paste editing, and version management of motion data within a DAW, similar to audio data.
This significantly improves the flexibility of the production workflow by enabling post-editing (replacement, timing adjustment, etc.) of motion and facial expression data, which previously required re-recording.
For details on the collaboration with 'GPAP', please refer to Yamaha Corporation's press release.
